Water Mill

Work Description

“Mills in the locality are usually built outside residential areas. Mills are owned by a person or a family, and when naming mills, they are usually referred to by the name of the person who first founded the mill. Looking at the mills that have survived from their first construction to the present day, it can be seen that the material used is usually stone. These stones are plastered with a mortar called Khorasan to make the structure more durable. The upper sides of the structures, whose height varies between 2.5-3 meters, are made in the form of a gable roof and supported by beams. The top of the roofs is covered with tiles or sheet metal. In addition to these structures, it is also possible to see mill buildings made of wood and adobe. During the renovation of the mills, which were damaged over time, bricks and briquettes have now started to be used.

When the operation of the mills, which seem to be a simple structure from the outside, is examined, it is seen that it is not as it was thought. In order to make a mill operational, tools and parts that require a lot of technical knowledge are needed. Some of these tools and sections are base pan, base board, thuja (shaft), millstone, bottom boat, granary, impeller, bucket, poyra, baltacik, pool, arc, channel, savacak, rudder, gravel and pig. Most of the mills operating in the region work 9-10 months of the year. In summer, when there is little water or when there is no product, the mills are not operated and their general maintenance is carried out. The products ground in the mills are corn, wheat and karma (animal food).

Story

“The founder of the museum Kenan Yavuz in his words:
When I was a child, there were two watermills in my village. One’s run by Uncle Adil, the other’s by
Torun. Both mills in time have collapsed and disappeared. It has always been a dream to rebuild a
watermill. When the dam started to be built in a neighbouring village, we were informed the ruins
of a watermill was going to be left under water. In order to rescue we re-located the mill and
collected the missing materials to revive it completely. It now functions perfectly! I didn’t name the
mill. I wanted it to represent all the mills that were destroyed. Scientists say that any food that is
industrial is a threat to our health. The most natural and healthy bread is made with flour
grounded in a water mill. Mass production lines mean less cost and more profit surely. Mass
production is a necessity of the competitive environment, over-population.
How strange is humanity? We lost ourselves trying to make a lot of money to be happy! But the
ways with which we make the money, cause us to spend most of it in the hospitals.
